I wouldn't put any TC onto the excellent 200-400mm/f4 AF-S VR; it would quickly turn some very expensive optics to a poor performer. Any 1.4x is kind of iffy for the 70-200mm/f2.8; it works better on the version 2 because it is a sharper lens to begin with.. The bottomline is that any TC is going to degrade your optics.

As a lightweight f2.8 more affordable 70-200 zoom for general use without VR and limited close up ability it seems to me a first class lens. Matt Grainger estimated IBIS is 2-3 stops lower than the 5 stops specification of the Nikon 70-200 f2.8. Based on this single estimate IBIS is worth about 2.5 stops.

I have Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. generally Canon II and III are same optical, and almost perfect full open, even with 42/60MP Sony cameras. gen i is older and not at same level. I also have Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR 1st gen, almost unusable for astrophotography wider than f5.6 at 200mm. Y842ZsV.
